Spokane Symphony Master Class: Natasha Paremski, Piano – May 11, 3-5pm.

Before her performances with the Spokane Symphony on Saturday, May 12 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 12 at 3pm., guest pianist Natasha Paremski will teach a master class for four local piano students at Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox. Paremski made her professional debut at age nine with the El Camino Youth Symphony in California, and at age 15 she debuted with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This class is free and open to the public to observe. Attending a master class gives attendees insight into the technique of the instrument as well as the personality of the artist. Spokane Sympthony Classics: The Heart Of Russia – May 12, 8pm., May 13, 3pm.

In the last Classics concert of the 72nd season of the Spokane Symphony, the theme is “The Heart of Russia.” Rachmaninoff was a teenager when he composed his romantic Piano Concerto No. 1, filled with lyrical melodies and lush orchestration. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, “Winterdreams,” is a celebration of winter, and the concert opens with Glinka’s Kamarinskaya, the first orchestral work based entirely on Russian folk music. The Spokane Symphony, with Eckart Preu conducting, will be joined by guest pianist Natasha Paremski who made her professional debut at age nineclassi, and debuted with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at age 15. She has won several prestigious artist prizes, including the Gilmore Young Artists prize in 2006 at the age of 18. Michael Jackson Tribute Show: May 14, 8pm.
The Michael Jackson Tribute Show starring impersonator Danny Dash Andrews honors the life and legacy of The King of Pop. Spokane Youth Symphony: Excellence That Inspires – May 20, 4pm.
The four orchestras of the Spokane Youth Symphony will perform: Spokane Youth Symphony Orchestra (Dr. Phillip Baldwin, conductor), Spokane Youth Philharmonic (Dr. Roberta Bottelli, conductor), Spokane Youth Sinfonietta (Ms. Heather Montgomery, conductor), and Spokane Youth Strings (Dr. John Marshall, conductor). This concert will feature the winners of the 2018 Spokane Youth Symphony Concerto Competition and a combined performance by the Philharmonic, Sinfonietta, and Strings orchestra. The M Show: Music, Mayhem & Mystery – May 24 & May 25, 8pm at the Washington Cracker Co. Building, 304 W. Pacific Avenue between Division and Washington in downtown Spokane.
This is the second round of “The M Show,” a witty and completely unorthodox series led and created by the Spokane Symphony’s creative concertmaster, Mateusz Wolski. It’s “classical virtuoso meets late night comedy.” With several musicians from the symphony, and a local beatboxer, Mateusz will perform classical music selections along with rock and roll and other genres. Skits, videos and laughter will fill the 90 minutes, as Mateusz shares his love of music, science, comedy and competition. Note:  This event takes place at the Washington Cracker Co. Fox Presents: “WEIRD AL” Yankovic with special guest Emo Phillips – May 27, 8pm.
“Weird Al” has dubbed his concert “The Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour.” For the first time in his career, the world’s foremost musical satirist and four-time Grammy Award winner foregoes his usual high octane, big production show for an intimate evening of music, focusing on original (non-parody) songs from his 14-album catalog. EWU Scherajazz Collaboration– May 31, 7:30pm.
Scheherajazz is a classical/jazz version of the orchestral masterwork, Scheherazade, by Rimsky-Korsakov. Scheherajazz was created in the 1950s by American bandleader Skip Martin. While it was recorded for an LP, the piece was never performed live, and the sheet music has since been lost. The original recording is on YouTube. In 2016, Scheherajazz was transcribed from the original LP by Klaus Wagenleiter. This concert will feature a variety of Eastern Washington University Chamber Ensembles, and proceeds will benefit the EWU Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble.
